Entering the Viden System

"Viden II, Captain!? Who’d have ever though that Fleet would actually run out of useful things for us to do?”

"You'd forego a bit of light duty before we return to the rigors of patrol?" Maddox mused, "I don't mind a bit of it myself. Viden II is said to be fairly advanced for this sector, I'll be very interested to see what they have to offer in way of 'exchange'."

"Entering the Viden System Captain." the lieutenant at the helm called out.

"Anything from the long range scans?" Maddox turned in his chair a bit to face the science station.

"Long range scanners detect a powerful network of broadcast satellites in orbit over Viden II captain, receiving and retransmitting signals from a central location on the surface to the rest of the planet. Very similar to Earth's brief flirtation with the broadcast medium known as telev..." the science ensign sputtered to a stop when he saw de Coursey looking on.

"You probably want the scope now, don't you sir?"

"Anything in the way of planetary communications?" Maddox asked the comm officer over his right shoulder.

"I am picking up some faint signals, but they're all concentrated inward. Everything is planet-locked, nothing aimed specifically outward as I can tell so far sir." replied the young woman as she made some adjustments to the controls at her panel.

De Coursey could have spent a lot longer with Millard Kelso, skipper of the Ptolemy, chewing over the old days. Things had been so much better then, when they hadn't been so much worse, of course. Kelso also seemed to have a knack of picking up rare and interesting beverages of a quaffworthy nature on his helter-skelter schedule of fuel dumps and deep space refill rendezvous.

But duty called, and Jan transferred back to the Endurance to do what… steam out to some half-baked “cultural exchange” recce to Viden II, of all the God-forsaken, cobweb-covered outposts of the civilised Universe.

His first words to Maddox as he entered the Bridge were indicative of his general feelings upon the matter.

“Viden II, Captain!? Who’d have ever though that Fleet would actually run out of useful things for us to do?” he grinned the kind of grin that a man makes when getting a hypo in the rump, the kind of grin that says ‘this is a pain, but it’s ridiculous enough to deserve a smile.’

A fresh faced Ensign in blue turned toward the Science Chief, blue light illuminating his face weirdly.

“Do you want the scope Sir?” he ventured.

De Coursey waved him back to the Science Station's binocular scanning device.

“That’s all right son, you’ll know when I want them.”

STARDATE 5205.7

Resupply and crew rotation is complete. We have bid farewell to the Ptolemy just in time to receive new orders from Starfleet Command. We have been ordered to the Viden system. Our mission there is to observe conditions on Viden II and gauge its suitability for a mutually-beneficial 'Cultural Exchange'.... we are en route and scheduled to arrive soon."

Maddox shut off the log recorder and Yeoman Gibson handed him a dataslate.

"Today's requisitions sir." she smiled pleasantly.

The captain took the stylus and gave the requisitions the once over before signing in the box at the bottom of the page. He passed it back without taking his eyes off the forward viewer.

Gibson, accustomed to being unnoticed by the captain while he was on duty, exited to take the latest log down to her office to be entered and encoded in the ship's library.

"Steady as she goes helm." Maddox said as the hiss of the doors sounded behind him.

"LIGHTS, CAMERA, ENDURANCE!" Episode 09 pt 1

Captain Samuel C. Maddox sat in the silence of the main briefing room on deck 3 aboard the USS Endurance. They were in the middle of crew rotation and resupply, so the Endurance was holding its position next to the USS Ptolemy, a Federation Transport Tug that was in the sector specifically for resupply purposes. The Ptolemy would also be ferrying some of the Endurance crew back to Starbase 15 for standard rotation.

Captain's Personal Log
Stardate 5201.3

It's spring now back home. The flowers are starting to blossom along the walkways and the dogwood next to my old bedroom window will be in full bloom by now.

I haven't been back home in six years... not since I was aboard the Republic. I've always been so far away, too far out to get back. So my shore leave is always spent on some leisure world or space station.

Doctor Chadwick has pointed out to me on more than one occasion that I need to learn how to relax and unwind from my duties as ship's captain. To that end I have made a concerted effort to make better use of the ship's recreation facilities.

So after my bridge duty shift everyday, I have developed a cycle of recreation that helps to keep my stress levels low. Monday I read in the Terrarium on Deck 9, Tuesdays is wrestling in the Gymnasium with some of the boys from security, Wednesday is jogging in the exterior corridor on Deck 6, Thursday is swimming laps, and then billiards and drinks on Deck 9 with de Coursey on Fridays.

According to Chadwick's own tests, my stress levels are down nearly a full 10 points.

Cage of Freedom

EPISODE 2 "Cage of Freedom" Stardate 4182.11

BRIEF SUMMARY: Members of the USS Endurance crew were kidnapped and tested by a powerful race of beings calling themselves the "Examiners." After three rounds of "tests," the kidnapped crewmembers were returned to the ship.

"If you are quite through with us, you can return us to the Endurance now. We grow weary of your games." — Striker to the Examiners

"You're just getting weary of it now? I was tired of it about 5 minutes after they asked their first stupid question!" — Thomas to Striker

EXTENDED SUMMARY: A series of forged communications caused the crew of the USS Endurance to prepare for what they believed was a serious outbreak of Xenopolycythemia at the distant Federation mining colony on Leonard's Planet. En route in deep space, however, the ship encountered a massive energy grid that gave the appearance of green hexes meshed together. Sensor scans registered the field as a solid perimeter wall. The field sent out an intensely powerful probe beam, and an entity which identified itself as the "High Examiner" declared that members of the Endurance crew had been chosen as representatives for the "examination" of their races.

This was the second recorded encounter between the "Examiners" and the Federation. The first encounter had also involved Captain Maddox, years earlier when he had been serving aboard the USS Republic.

Commander Savalis (XO), Dr. Chadwick (CMO), Dr. T'Kel (psychology), Lt. Commander Striker (security), Lt. Tulouse (helm), Lt. Thomas (communications) and Lt. Gamelson (security) were transported from the ship to a "testing area" — apparently aboard a massive, cloaked ship — where they were subjected to a series of "tests" by the Examiners. All attempts by the abducted crewmembers to contact the Endurance failed, as their communicators could read only static.

As presented by the Examiners, the first round of testing was the "Cerebral Portion," which required that the crew answer questions correctly or be eliminated. The Examiners posed a series of geometric and logic questions. When Lt. Tulouse blurted out a guess, he was "eliminated" — the Examiners appeared to wipe him out of existance. First question was correctly answered by T'Kel and the second by Savalis, which results were duly recorded by the Examiners.

Lt. Thomas deliberately answered the third question incorrectly as her own test to find out what the Examiners would do — and she too was similarly wiped out of existance. Dr. Chadwick then provided the correct answer to the question. The crew next attempted to probe the limits of the "testing area" in which they were confined, only to find that the space appeared to go on in all directions without any discernable change. Dr. Chadwick next began to argue with the Examiners, refusing to answer any more questions. The response of the Examiners was to appear to vaporize him as well.

Further refusal on the part of the remaining crew to participate in further examinations, resulted in a ruling by the Examiners that the remaining questions of the "Cerebral Portion" of the test were in default. The crew — including the formerly eliminated Tulouse, Thomas and Chadwick — were next brought to what appeared to be a tropical jungle for the second round of their investigation. The Examiners then ordered the crew to scale a nearby mountain as the "Physical Portion" of the test.

Rather than participate in the Examiner's test, Lt. Thomas came up with a plan to boost her communicator's range using the powerpack from a Phaser II. This led her to discover a nearby shielded power source whose static field emissions were the apparent cause of the interference picked up by the crew's communicators. Meanwhile, T'Kel prematurely began to develop symptoms of her Vulcan reproductive cycle. Dr. Chadwick grew concerned when this development appeared to have an effect on both Commanders Savalis and Striker.

The crew eventually found the shielded power source behind what seemed to be a solid wall of vines and plantlife. The crew had now gone many hours without food or water, so Savalis decided to seek out a source of potable water. Taking Tulouse, he left Striker, Chadwick, Gamelson and T'Kel to cut through the vine wall. Striker decided to break through the wall by setting his phaser to overload. His efforts blasted the reality of the vines to what appeared to be a featureless white "wall" — a wall behind the "reality" of the Examiner's jungle. Confusing matters almost immediately, Striker was attacked and appeared to be bitten by some kind of arachnid.

While Dr. Chadwick treated Commander Striker's wound, Savalis and Tulouse rejoined the others who continued to probe the "hole" that had been created in the jungle. Closer inspection led to the discovery of a passage to an inner room that contained two Federation tricorders, a medkit and two communicators. When the crew left the jungle area, Striker's wound disappeared, leading all to the conclusion that everything the crew had experienced had been an illusion. Scans seemed to indicate that the crew was (and had always been) on board an enormous, cloaked, warp-capable vessel of unknown design. The Examiners then declared the second portion of the test over and declared that Captain Maddox would unknowingly be the subject of the third portion of the test.

Throughout the period that Savalis and the abducted crewmembers had been tested, Captain Maddox and the Endurance had been engaged in a frantic search for their missing comrades. Every scan yielded no clue as to their whereabouts and — all the while — the clock was ticking for what Maddox still believed were plague victims on Leonard's Planet. In the end, the captain decided he must give up his search and sacrifice his missing crewmembers for the greater good of saving thousands of colonists. The Examiners declared that as a result of this action, Maddox and humanity had "passed" the last portion of the test. The Examiners then returned the missing crewmembers to the ship and ended further interference with the mission.

Communication with Starbase 15 confirmed that the supposed plague on Leonard's Planet was merely a hoax concocted by the Examiners.

CASUALTIES: No deaths. Savalis and Thomas admitted to Sick Bay.
CREW ROTATIONS/PROMOTIONS: Lt. Commander Striker promoted to Security Chief.
CITATIONS: Medal of Sacrifice: Savalis, Striker, Chadwick, T'Kel, Thomas and Gamelson.

Manifest Destiny

EPISODE 1 "Manifest Destiny" Stardate 04814.1

BRIEF SUMMARY: On its shake-down cruise, the USS Endurance discovered that Klingons had secretly established control over the borderlands world of Verian II — a Federation colony whose population rejected modern technology.

"I must defend myself if you attack, Ha'DIbaH." — Savalis to a Klingon

"Good work Mr. Savalis... but do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" — Maddox to Savalis

"A kiss captain, would be most representative of the emotions we Vulcans tend not to display..." — Savalis to Maddox

EXTENDED SUMMARY: As the newly-constructed USS Endurance (NCC-1862) waited for its first captain to transfer from the USS Republic (NCC-1371), First Officer Savalis oversaw the final "shake-down" aspects of its construction — all were within specifications, save for some potential damage to the warp drive caused by a minor intermix error. Captain James Apple of the Republic transferred the final supplies to the ship. Endurance communications officer Bonnie Thomas recorded in her log that the complete supply manifest read "1 Starship Captain" — none other than Samuel C. Maddox, the Republic's former XO.

A priority communique from Admiral Elizer routed the Endurance's shakedown cruise to the Verian star system — deep into the borderland region between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, immediately adjacent to the Klingon Neutral Zone. A collision between a Federation-registered merchanteer and a Klingon scout ship in the Verian system had contributed to another tense moment in Federation/Klingon relations.

The Verian system was home to one of the more successful recent expressions of the Neo-Luddite movement — which called for Federation citizens to recreate a simple way of life by abandoning modern technology (cf. lost Bringloid expedition, failed Eden expedition, Omicron Ceti III, etc.) Verian II, colonized in 2233, had achieved a population of about 3,500 humans engaged in the attempt to recreate the lifestyle lived by 18th-Century English Colonists in Earth's North America. The only modern technology on the planet was a subspace transmitter which the Federation insisted be maintained due to the planet's proximity to Klingon space. However, for 1 year prior to the Endurance's mission, Starfleet had received no subspace transmission from Verian II.

The nature of the colony necessitated period disguises for the landing party, which consisted of Captain Maddox, First Officer Savalis, Lt. Aronax (tactical), Lt. Bonnie Thomas (communications), Ensign Joseph Gamelson (engineering), and Ensign Azaal (security). In the cases of Savalis (a Vulcan) and Azaal (an Andorrian), the diguises — which Lt. Thomas devised — had to be especially inventive.

Scans from the planet's surface identified several initially unexplained sources of Delta radiation, which prompted the captain to divide the landing party into two groups. The captain, Savalis and Thomas went to meet the planetary governor while Aronax, Gamelson and Azaal attempted to identify one of the Delta ray sources. Because of interference from the radiation, the groups lost communications contact with each other and with the Endurance.

Aronax's scouting party located and identified a modern metallic device as the source of the rays. Gamelson confirmed that the device was of Klingon manufacture. Lt. Aronex decided to probe the device more closely, setting off a Klingon booby-trap. The resulting explosion caused Aronex's own death and knocked Azaal and Gamelson unconscious.

The captain's team succeeded in receiving an audience from the Governor, William Harrison, in the primary New Virginia settlement. But the landing party quickly learned that the governor had made some compact with Commander Klevik of the Klingon Defense Force, and briefly fell into the control of Klevik and six of his men. Quick thinking and the nimble fingers of Savalis allowed the landing party to turn the tables on the Klingons. Taking the Klingons in tow, the captain and his team located the colonial Subspace transmitter where an additional frackass allowed Klevik and his Klingons to escape back to their cloaked ship, the IKS K'Ploctq. Lt. Thomas was able to break through Klingon jamming using a boosted signal from the colonial transmitter long enough to get a message through, warning the Endurance of the K'Ploctq's presence.

Under prodding, Governor Harrison revealed that the discovery of a dangerous, warlike race of red-skinned "savages" on the planet had led to a deal with the Klingons, who were secretly preventing any outgoing transmissions from the colony to the Federation. The governor believed that the Klingon Delta ray generators were the only thing preventing the savages from overrunning the colony — and, in retaliation for the presence of the Endurance landing teams, the Klingons had apparently shut them all off. In prepration for the anticipated attack, the governor called the colonial militia to arms.

Meanwhile, out of communicator contact with the landing party, Second Officer Ronald Kelley, in command of the Endurance, assembled two rescue parties. The first, sent to the surface via the shuttlecraft James Caird, included Lt. Ramon Tulouse and Dr. T'Kel. The second — consisting of Dr. Chadwick, Nurse Penney and Ensign Ford (security) — was beamed to the site of the explosion (scanned from the ship) where Lt. Aronax and his team had been incapacitated. They learned that Azaal and Gamelson had been rescued and nursed back to consciousness by a colonial farmer and his daughter. The reunited crewmembers along with the farmer and daughter all barricaded themselves in the farmer's house when an enormous wave of "savages" attacked. The Endurance crew held the "savages" off using phasers set on stun, wide-dispersal.

As a much larger force of Verian II "savages" massed to attack the New Virginia settlement, Savalis ascertained that naturally occuring Delta rays in the environment could be amplified using energy from the captured Klingon disruptors. The rays staved off the invasion, causing a hypnotic effect in the attacking "savages."

Dr. Chadwick performed several tests one of the stunned "savages" and determined that the individual was actually an indigenous inhabitant of Verian II. He then returned to the ship to perform emergency surgery on Lt. Azaal. When Azaal recovered, his antennae picked up some disturbance which momentarily caused in him the same berserker rage which had been witnessed in the natives.

Chadwick realized that even as the Delta rays from the Klingon emitters had been keeping the "savages" at bay, another radiation source was causing them to behave like violent berserkers. Commander Kelley on the Endurance identified the source of the second form of radiation as the cloaked IKS K'Ploctq. A brief fire fight convinced the K'Ploctq to retreat, freeing the natives and restoring communications between the landing parties and the Endurance.

The landing party, rejoined by Dr. Chadwick, transported to a new area where they attempted to communicate with the now-docile native "Verianites." Further analysis led to the conclusion that radiation, naturally occuring in variable amounts from the system's Van Allen Belts, resulted in an aggrevating effect on the Verian II natives brainwaves, causing them to behave violently. Nature compensated by giving the Verianites a hybernation cycle corresponding to the height of the radiation output from the Van Allen Belts. The Klingons had discovered the frequency of the naturally occuring radiation and simulated it for their own purposes.

The Endurance team left the colony with two Languange Training Module computers and instructions to establish positive relations with the red-skinned natives — hopefully with better results than their ancestors had accomplished centuries past on Earth!

Personal History:
Her early childhood was spent as a tomboy. Even though her mother would put Leah in the most feminine of dresses, Leah would rather play in the mud with her 4 older brothers. She took an active interest in sports and tried to compete with her older brothers. This upset her mother, who wanted a daughter and when she was finally able to have one the daughter turned out to be a tomboy! Outside of Leah's early rebellion against her mother's wishes she was a rather well behaved child. She did well in school and never got into trouble.

As Leah began to enter her adolescence, she grew more interested in athletics. She joined her school's Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Soccer, Swimming and Tennis teams. She also started to become more interested in boys, and maybe as a result of that began to accept and embraced her femininity. As a result, she formed a bond with her mother that lasts until this day.

Her decision to join Starfleet was a shock to her parents. She had never expressed any interest in Starfleet and one day, which seemed out of nowhere, she informed them she would be joining. This caused quite a stir at the dinner table but Leah stood her ground and her parents eventually came to reluctantly live with her decision. Her brothers were also shocked, but sort of expected it. Leah was always the energetic bubbly one of the family who had high ideals and goals, and what better place to explore those than Starfleet.

Life at the Academy was quite an eye opener for Leah. Before she arrived at the academy her contact with aliens had been rather limited. Sure there was that family vacation to Vulcan that one year but she mostly remembered how hot it was there and the constant fighting of her parents. And while the Academy at Earth was still rather human dominated, there was still a lot of new species Leah had never encountered before. While at first she felt uncomfortable, she began to enjoy learning about their species and cultures. Her mind began to open and she really enjoyed the idea of one day being on a first contact mission.

At the Academy she was an excellent student. While most cadets do a normal four year stint at the Academy Leah decided to do five. It allowed her to focus more on her sports commitments, flying and her minor of diplomacy. Due to the extra year, and her good standing academically, she was given a pre graduation commission with the rank of ensign.

Leah's natural talent at flying was obvious from the start of her Academy career. Her talent, however, was not refined until much later and lacked the polish other, more experienced, cadets had. She worked hard and managed to get a good ranking and eventually rose to as high as #7 out of all Cadets. That changed, however, when a month before graduation a group of cadets were practicing formations for the Graduation ceremony. The group was planning on doing a Kolvoord Starburst. An accident left all five cadets dead and the move was banned from all future Academy events. The aftermath of the accident left Leah as the #2 ranked cadet pilot at the Academy. Her new ranking opened up many more opportunities post graduation.

Leah graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2268 as a Magna cum laude graduate. Due to her pre commission rank of ensign, along with her class standing she was offered a position as Senior Helmsman on board the USS Hannibal. She showed her ability to think under pressure on the Hannibal during the the Starbase 11 comet crisis. Her strong helm skills saved the Hannibal from destruction numerous times and she was able to take over Navigation while still performing her helm duties. This led to her promotion to Lt. Commander and her current assignment on the USS Endurance as the Chief Navigation Officer. She has made Lt. Commander faster than anyone else in the fleet.
